Mission

About School of Nursing

The School of Nursing is one of the Schools in Dedan Kimathi University of Technology committed to training nursing students by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to provide leadership in professional nursing practice, education, health care administration and participation in research.

The school is committed to achieving its vision, “To propel healthcare to utmost height through excellence in nursing education, research, consultancy and community service”.

The school’s mission is “To prepare highly skilled nursing professionals capable of providing health care services in diverse settings in the country and beyond; carry out and participate in innovative research; provide consultancy and undertake community service”.

The school comprises of four departments: Medical-Surgical Nursing, Midwifery/Reproductive Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing and Nursing Education, Leadership and Management and Research. The departments are comprised of staff with specific relevant and varied specialties required for training competent nurses who are much needed to offer services in the region and beyond.

History of DeKUT Nursing Program

The Bachelor of Science in nursing course at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology had its initial batch of students in June 2011. Kimathi University College of Technology(KUCT), then a constituent college of JKUAT, started with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Upgrading) for in-service Diploma in Nursing (KRCHN) holders. The pioneer class had ten (10) students. Later, the following year in September 2012, the first class of direct entry students was admitted. The pioneer group of direct entry students comprised thirty-one (31) students. The program has had continued growth in student enrollment and staffing as well as classroom, offices, laboratory and other infrastructural expansion. Several cohorts have now graduated and are out in the market, both locally and internationally.  To date (March 2025) four hundred and sixty-eight (468) students have graduated with Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BscN) Degree. Currently there are three cohorts of BscN-Upgrading and five cohorts of direct entry students, with a combined population of four hundred and ninety-six (496) students. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing course at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, with its thorough theoretical, laboratory and clinical skills and through partnership with the Nyeri, Laikipia, and Kirinyaga together with the Ministry of Health, the Nursing council of Kenya (NCK), and other partners, produces all-round, highly competent graduates ready to excel in the diverse working environments.
